Compositional Methodology
The compositional methods and tools I draw on, applied by hand and with computational assistance.
I think of composition as a puzzle of sorts: a process of mining materials and parameters from a specific idea, program, or problem to realize a piece. Additionally, the simultaneous use of multiple compositional methodologies is a particular fascination—one that allows the same source material to be developed through recontextualization, as each method produces music with qualities depending on approach. Each compositional methodology is a possible path from a starting point mined from the idea of the piece. Finding the right path for the piece is the fun part!
Some composers use a piano to compose. I use a computer and my knowledge of compositional methodologies. These really function as collaborators in my work. While I make use of a computer, the goal is not automation, but the expansion of creative possibility through systematic investigation.

- Sonification: Translation of non-musical data (text mostly) into musical parameters.
- Interval & Rhythmic Cycles: Permutations of ordered sets used as generative engines for both pitch and time structures.
- Isorhythm & Interference Patterns (Schillinger): Superimposition of independent ordered pitch, rhythmic, and other parametric patterns.
- Set Theory: Theoretical tools to generate and shape intervalic-focused materials.
- Serial Processes & Rotational Arrays: Order collections and circular permutation systems to develop materials.
- Neo-Riemannian Transformations: Mapping harmonic motion through contextual relationships rather than tonal hierarchy.
- Magic Squares & Fractals: Mathematical wizardry and recursive patterns used to create structural schemes, texture, and musical parameters.

- Dorico: Notation/Engraving of traditional scores and parts.
- Illustrator & Affinity: Traditional score clean-up and graphic score creation.
- Ableton Live: Real-time performance and processing, electronic music composition environment, and general sound/compositional playground.
- Max/MSP: Real-time processing, interactive systems, and electronic sound design.
- SuperCollider: Algorithmic design and composition environment, and live electronic manipulation.
- Kontakt & SWAM Instruments: Sample and physical modeling-based midi realizations and electronic performance instruments.
